Dave Rohr was a skinny child, who became athletic as a young adult, only to see his physical conditioning slip away from him as a young middle-aged man. After a severe hypoglycemic event left him lying on a gurney in a Virginia medical center, his doctor said "just face it, David, you're growing old". That wasn't an adequate response from Dave's perspective. Dave began a quest for health & fitness information pertinent to adult men. His quest took him into the areas of Hormone Replacement Therapy, nutrition, and, ultimately, bodybuilding.
Dave competed in the 2001 NPC Sacramento bodybuilding competition at the age of 49, and placed 4th in the Grand Masters Division of the NPC 2004 Border States Bodybuilding Championship, and 3rd in the same contest in 2006. Recently, Dave placed 5th in Grand Masters at the NPC 2007 Border States.
Dave is a member of The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine.

In 1996, at the age of 43, Joey found himself flat on his back in Cardiac Intensive Care. With bodyfat in excess of 35% and overall weight of 228#, he was headed for serious trouble. He has learned first hand the value of proper exercise and good nutrition. At the age of 54, he placed 4th in the Grand Masters Division of the NPC 2006 Border States Bodybuilding Championship. Recently, he competed alongside Dave Rohr in the 2007 Border States, winning 6th place in his division.
Joey holds a B.A. from Southwestern At Memphis (now Rhodes College). He specializes in working with clients interested in making sustainable improvements in their body composition through the application of scientifically proven exercise techniques and good nutrition.

I have a medical condition. Can you still help me?
Generally, the answer is an emphatic "yes"! Prime Fitness will, with your consent, undertake a health screening and evaluation. Medical conditions such as diabetes, hypoglycemia, high blood pressure and arthritis all require application of special knowledge and a clearance from your personal physician. Prime Fitness coordinates with your health professionals to make sure that you receive appropriate, quality training.

I've tried diets and exercise before. They've never worked.
What's different about what you do?
Prime Fitness's trainers teach you the fundamentals of why and how you gain and lose body fat, and why and how you build muscle. While no program can absolutely guarantee success, the body is a biochemical machine. If you give it the right food and exercise it properly, your body will respond in a predictable way. In addition, Prime Fitness works with and can refer you to licensed dietitians, hormone-aware physicians, physical therapists, and even masseurs who can further support your goals.

Is it too late for me? Can I still make meaningful changes at my age?
Studies have shown that people can change their body composition, increase strength and agility, and improve the quality of their lives at any age. From your 30's and 40's to your 70's, 80's and beyond, a program of safe rational exercise geared to your abilities and objectives can make positive changes in your appearance and your life.

It does not matter whether you were once athletic or not, or whether you have medical constraints. When necessary, Prime Fitness's trainers can create safe and effective programs of cardiovascular and resistance training within limits established by your personal physician.

How quickly can I build muscle & lose fat?
The response of an individual to exercise is highly variable. A rule of thumb for experienced bodybuilders is a gain of 10# of lean muscle mass per year. A more typical rate of gain is 6-8# per year. Fat loss is also variable. Some authorities suggest that the safest fat loss programs, which spare lean muscle and target fat, should target a loss of not more than 1% of bodyweight per week.

For example, if you are overweight at 230# and carry 25% body fat, you have a lean mass of 173#. If in a year you have gained 6# of lean muscle and lost 20# of body fat, your new body fat level will be a far healthier 17%, and your appearance will be much trimmer.

Beware of supplements which promise large muscle gains, and diets that promise drastic weight loss. If you gain too rapidly, much of the gain will be fat, and if you starve off fat, you will starve off muscle at the same time!

Palm Springs / Coachella Valley Visitor Information

Valley MapFor clients outside of the Palm Springs / Coachella Valley area, Prime Fitness offers the following information and links: The Coachella Valley is an irrigated agricultural and recreational desert valley in southern California, United States (U.S.), east of Los Angeles. The valley extends for approximately 45 miles (72 km) in Riverside County southeast from the San Bernardino Mountains to the saltwater Salton Sea, the largest lake in California. It is approximately 15 miles (24 km) wide along most of its length, bounded on the west by the San Jacinto Mountains and the Santa Rosa Mountains and on the north and east by the Little San Bernardino Mountains.
The San Andreas Fault crosses the valley from the Chocolate Mountains in the southeast corner and along the centerline of the Little San Bernardinos. The fault is easily visible along its northern length as a strip of greenery against an otherwise bare mountain. The Chocolate Mountains are home to a United States Navy live gunnery range and are mostly off-limits to the public. In comparison to the "Inland Empire" (Riverside-San Bernardino area and the California desert), some people refer to the Coachella Valley as the "Desert Empire". Geographers and geologists sometimes call the area, along with the Imperial Valley to the south, the "Cahuilla Basin" or the "Salton Trough."
